Evaluation of qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening of Rivea hypocrateriformis

Rivea hypocrateriformis (Desr.) Choisy, a woody climbing shrub belonging to the Convolvulaceae family, is widely distributed across India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Thailand. In traditional medicine, various parts of this plant, including its bark, stems, and leaves, have been employed to address a range of health concerns, such as malaria, cancer, mental disorders, and pain relief. This study aimed to explore the qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis of R. hypocrateriformis leaves. Qualitative phytochemical analysis identified the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, flavonoids, glycosides, phenolic compounds, and tannins while the quantitative phytochemical analysis showed that ethanolic extract is richest in phenolic and flavovonids content. This study on R. hypocrateriformis leaves serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for species identification, and the development of quality parameters. The data obtained in this study may be regarded as a reference for future research endeavors.

Antioxidant Potential of Solanum Spirale Shoot and Berry: a Medicinal Food Plant Used in Arunachal Pradesh

ABSTARCT Solanum spirale is a tribal medicinal food plant which is used among the Adi tribes of Arunachal Pradesh, India. The methanol extract of shoot and berry were studied for their total phenolic (Folin-Ciocalteu’s method) and total flavonoid contents (colorimetric method) to study antioxidant potential ((DPPH & ABTS). The extracts were recorded to contain considerable amounts of phenolic content (18.64±2.12 mg GAE/g) in shoot and 11.72±1.42 mg GAE/g) in mature berry and flavonoid content of (5.29±1.01 µM RE/g) in shoot&50.52±1.03 µM RE/g) in mature berry and antioxidant potentials were calculated as 29.85±1.25 µM/g in the ABTS assay of shoot and38.27±1.33µM/g in the ABTS assay of berry while 45.4±0.37µM/g in the DPPH assay of shoot and 52±0.92 µM/g in the DPPH assay of mature berry respectively. This work also discourse traditional use of Solanum spirale among Adi tribes of Arunachal Pradesh. Correlation of TPC and TFC with Antioxidant Activity of Selected Indian Medicinal Plants

In recent times, interest has focused on phytochemicals as new sources of natural antioxidants. Therefore, the methanolic crude extracts of Acorus calamus, Lantana camara, Plumbago zeylanica and clitoria ternatea, were screened for total phenols, flavonoids, and free radical scavenging activity. Free radical scavenging activity was evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH). Significant differences in DPPH scavenging activity were found between the species investigated, ranging from 26.36 ± 1.00% to 91.14 ± 1.02%. The highest radical scavenging activity was observed in Acorus calamus (91.14 ±1.02% inhibition). The total phenol content of the investigated species ranged from 23.43±0.18 to 57.33± 2.21 mg GAE/g extract, while flavonoid content ranged from 5.76±2.12 to 20.17 ± 2.72 mg QE/g extract. A weak linear correlation between total phenolic or flavonoid content and antioxidant activity was found (correlation coefficient, R2 =0.2319 and R2 = 0.2605, respectively).
